Posting blog from my cellphone

Posted by hatim Tue, 20 May 2008 18:33:00 GMT

I have finally broken the taboo. I am posting this blog from my Sony Erricson W810i.

Edit: Actually the above two sentences were the only things which i was able to post from my cell phone (this I am posting from my Desktop at work). Yesterday I decided to enable WAP over my cellphone. It was much easier than the last time I had tried. My cellphone service provider is an old memoth and is loosing its customers fast to new rivals, so I guess they have made their customer services much better. Any who I only used it to reply to one messege which i got on my gmail and to post this blog micro entry above. Poisting blog from a cell phone like mine is a big hassle in my opnion, but still its better than not posting at all.

Focus on quality, not quantity.

Posted by hatim Mon, 03 Dec 2007 23:54:00 GMT

I have been maintaining a blog for about 3 years now in one form or the other, but I have yet to achieve maturity in my blogging. Come to think of it if I were to become a well known blogger on subjects which I cherish to talk about, I would not hesitate a minute and hide all the previous garbage that I have been maintaining for past 3 years. Hopefully I will gain maturity over time and put quality content on my blog.

Thinking about MacBook Pro 2008

Posted by hatim Fri, 23 Nov 2007 14:58:00 GMT

I am in need of a new laptop in coming months. For me the decession was simple, it just had to be a 17 inch Mac Book Pro. Having a MacBook has many advantages, first of all its Apple machine, so it adds a lot of cool points to your personality :P. Secondly being a devloper you could run any major Desktop-OS on that machine.
At around 2400$ it feels a bit expensive, but I was not able to find much difference between prices of MacBooks and other high end laptops. There are some other aspects to the machine as well, it has a high end graphics card which I don't plan to use much. It's battery time is not the best in the market and it is sensitive machine, unlike HP or Acer which can rough out much more IMO. Also I am not really sure when would Apple be laucnhing it's latest product offerings (it is speculated that may annouce a Peryne based MacBook Pro as early as January 2008 in Apple WDC)
I will post the following questions on some credible Mac forums

So far I have been able to come up with following list of questions, I will try to get them answered on different tech sites/forums very soon

  1. From experience when should we expect new MacBook Pro's?
  2. Are refurbished MacBook pros a good deal?
  3. Is there any chance of design flaws in the upcoming MacBook pros, considering that they would be of a new generation of processors. Would it be based on proven core?
  4. Is there any real user experince difference between 17inch mac book pro and 15inch MacBook Pro.?
  5. Is 5400RPM hard disk fast enough, is 7200RPM worth the extra money (I would avoid putting in my own hard drive for now)?

Porting from Blogger

Posted by hatim Sun, 11 Mar 2007 16:50:00 GMT

One of the primary reason I have my blog on a personal domain-name/server is that I don't have to deal with arbitrary outages to blog services. Blogger was banned in my country after the cartoon scandal in early 2006. I can understand why my government would ban some blogs, but an unconditional block on all blogs is plain absurd. Now with my own websapce and domain name I have more control over my web presence.

I have many tasks for my new blog. Most important of them is to import entries from blogger. My current plan is to manually post stuff one by one. This way I will be able to clean stuff from around 260 posts I have done on blogger. I have looked into RSS based migrations from Blogger to Type, but since my previous entries are unstructured I definitely need a migration_by_hand

I did try to post an entry with dates of publishing for Dec 2006 (by manually changing MySQL for contents table of Typo),but It didn't work as it was expected to. It would definitely be a great help to me If I get hold of a desktop publishing client for Typo which can also manipulate date of blog posting.

Finally my own ruby hosting plan and domain name

Posted by hatim Sun, 11 Feb 2007 08:27:00 GMT

I had been contemplating this for a very long time, but its done now. I had bought domain name from GoDaddy.com three months ago and I finally took the time to buy my self a nice hosting plan with a site called RailsPlayGround.com. As the name suggests this site is meant for Ruby on Rails developers to play with their rails applications.

First thing I have done on this site is to Install Typo as my primary blog engine. It would be nice to build my own blog engine one day, but meanwhile I can post my blog entries here and migrate(clean) blog entries from blogger.
